History
Brief:
In 1659, Gov. Winthrop purchased land from the Indians for a Plantation at Quinnibaug. This tract included the present towns of Plainfield and Canterbury. Settlers came largely from Massachusetts in 1689. In May 1699, the inhabitants of Quinabaug were granted the privileges of a township. In 1700 the Governor named the Plantation as the town of Plainfield. Town vital records begin 1695. Barbour collection records cover 1699-1852.
