History
Brief:
Fitz-John Winthrop and James Fitch had conflicting claims on this land near the Quinebaug River. After Winthrop became Governor in 1698, it became the township of Kellingly. In May 1708, Killingly became a town. Until 1849, this section was known as Pomfret Factory. From 1849 to 1855, it was known as Quinnebaug. In 1855, it was incorporated as the separate town of Putnam. Town vital records begin 1855.
