History
Brief:
The town was settled about 1736 with New Fairfield. In May 1742 was divided into a Northern and Southern Society. The Northern Society was incorporated as the town of Sherman in October 1802. Town vital records begin 1802. Barbour collection records cover 1802-1850.

Date: 1729 Description: The Indian sachem named Mauwehu and 12 other chiefs signed a deed giving the colonists the land. Date: 1736/37 Description: The eleven proprietors divided the "Upper Seven Miles" (Sherman) from the "Lower Seven Miles" (New Fairfield) Date: 1742 Description: The General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut granted Sherman its own parish so it could have its own church. Date: 1775 Description: The Revolutionary War - William Giddings of Sherman received his commission as captain from General Washington. Date: 1778 Description: Coming down Quaker Hill, Gen Washington and his army passed through North Sherman on their way to Boston to save the French fleet stationed there.
