History
Brief: |
Captain Nathaniel Turner purchased this area, known as Rippowam, for the New Haven Colony in 1640. People from Wethersfield purchased most of this land in 1641 to form the town of Stanford (also called the Plantation of Stanford). In early records, the name is often spelled, Stanford, but was always pronounced as currently spelled, Stamford. Town vital records begin 1641. Barbour collection records cover 1641-1852. |
