History
Brief:
This area was part of the Western Lands (Goshen, Colebrook, Kent, Hartland, Norfolk, Canaan, Cornwall, Salisbury, Sharon, Torrington, Barkhamsted, Harwinton, Winchester and New Hartford) made over to Hartford and Windsor in 1686 to save them from being taken by the Royal Gov. Andros. In a further division of February 1732 the land now included in Torrington, Colebrook, Barkhamsted and the western half of Harwinton was given to Windsor. The settlement was granted town privileges as Torrington in October 1740. Town vital records begin 1741. Barbour collection records cover 1740-1850.
