Brief: |
This is one of the towns formed from 1635 Saybrook Colony. The Westbrook area was first settled as the western part of Saybrook and was called the Oyster River Quarter. In May 1724, it was established as the Waterbury West Society. The community was known by its Indian name, Pochaug, until it was separated from Saybrook and named Westbrook in 1810. Westbrook was incorporated as the town of Westbrook in 1840. Town vital records begin 1638. Barbour collection records cover 1840-1851.
