History
Brief:
This tract was part of the land bequeathed by Joshua Uncas, Sachem of the Mohegans, to 16 men in Norwich and neighboring towns. The General Court allowed the claim in 1678. The first settler was John Coates in the autumn of 1688. On 12 May 1692, the area became the town of Windham. Town vital records begin 1692. Barbour collection records cover 1692-1850.
