Benjamin Chaplin bought a tract of land here on the Natchaug River in 1756, laid out farms, and built a mansion. At his death in 1795 he left a bequest to support a minister and Chaplin Society was incorporated in 1809. In May 1822 it became the town of Chaplin including land taken from Mansfield, Hampton and Windham. Town vital records begin 1896. Barbour collection records cover 1822-51.
