Jeremiah Adams of Hartford was granted land here in March 1661/2 and the area became known as Jeremiah�s Farme. It was also called the Plantation of Twenty-mile River. In 1669, the Court ruled that the plantation should be called Colchester. The town was incorporated in 1698. Town vital records begin 1698. Barbour collection records cover 1699-1850.
