History
Brief: |
Barkhamsted, was part of a great tract of land called the Western Lands (Goshen, Colebrook, Kent, Hartland, Norfolk, Canaan, Cornwall, Salisbury, Sharon, Torrington, Barkhamsted, Harwinton, Winchester and New Hartford) made over to Hartford and Windsor covering nearly all of what is now Litchfield County in western CT. This tract was made over to the towns of Hartford and Windsor at a Special Session of the General Court called by Gov. Robert Treat at Hartford on 26 January 1686. This action was taken because the colonists feared that Sir Edmund Andros would try to the land for the Crown. In May 1726, the Court authorized a division of land. Half was reserved to the Colony for sale and the other half divided between Hartford and Windsor. Present day Barkhamsted was part of that given to Windsor. In 1732 Windsor granted the land to the settlers there and the Court established the town of Berkhampstead. The spelling changed to Barkhampstead in 1753 and to Barkhamsted in 1795. Town vital records begin in 1777. Barbour collection records cover 1779-1854. |
