This is one of the towns formed from the 1635 Saybrook Colony. In 1852, the General Assembly divided Saybrook into the town of Old Saybrook and the town of Saybrook. Old Saybrook was divided again in 1854 and the northern part set off as the town of Essex. In 1859, the Centerbrook section (Ivoryton) was added to Essex. Town vital records begin 1852.
