After the King Phillips War this land, settled by the Showtcuket Indians was broken up and sold to the proprietors of Ipswich, Massachusetts. By 1718, the inhabitants were characterized as Farmers in ye Crotch of ye River. The Ecclesiastical Society which grew up here was called the North East Society of Norwich and in October 1722 was named Newent. It was incorporated as a Parish in 1723 and as a town in 1786 when it was named, Lisbon. Town vital records begin 1788. Barbour collection records cover 1786-1850. |
