History
Brief: |
This is one of the towns formed from the 1635 Saybrook Colony. The Saybrook settlement spread to the east side of the Connecticut River about 1664 on this tract. In May 1667, the General Court at Hartford ordered the Plantation on the East Side of the River at Saybrook to be named the town of Lyme. This included the area that is now Lyme, East Lyme, Old Lyme and parts of East Haddam. The present town of Lyme is not the oldest, but that part identified as the North Society. In 1824, rights of an independent Society were granted to inhabitants of the north end of Lyme and the south end of Haddam East Society. East Lyme was set off in 1839, Old Lyme in 1855 and East Haddam taken from Haddam in May 1724. Town vital records begin 1666.
Barbour collection records cover 1667-1852.
