History
Brief: |
Rev. Henry Whitfield and his associates purchased part of this land on 29 September 1639. A second purchase was made from the Niantic Indians on 20 September 1641. Settlement and expansion went forward with Guilford. In 1703 the inhabitants of the eastern part of Guilford became a separate Society. Three years later the name East Guilford came into use. In 1753, the North Bristol Society was incorporated. The East Guilford Society and the North Bristol Society were incorporated as the town in May 1826 and named, Madison, after the fourth President. Town vital records begin 1826.
