History
Brief: |
A few settlers were here as early as 1702 but major settlement occurred after the Revolutionary War. In May, 1757 individuals living in Waterbury First Society (West Farms), contiguous parts of Westbury, Oxford, Southbury and the Old Society of Woodbury petitioned for winter privileges but were refused. Several other attempts were made. Finally in 1790, West Farms and adjoining portions of Woodbury and Southbury were made into a distinct Society of Middlebury. The Society was incorporated as the town of Middlebury in 1807. Town vital records begin 1807. Barbour collection records cover 1807-1850. |
